Outbreak!!!

S2 and S5 were at a topical workshop at the science centre. They were part of a "government team" making decisions on what to do if a flu virus broke out in the country (booked before all the latest news of a flu outbreak). They had to decide if they would tell the public, cull birds, use an unlicensed vaccine, who they would give antiviral drugs to etc. Happliy the team took most of the right decisions and a world wide pandemic was avoided - maybe we should put them in charge of the economy next!

Can we solve it? Yes we can!

Here's the problem: Mrs Kirk is making a banner to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the school.  She wanted to know the height available on the wall for the banner but this would be difficult to measure.   Hannah and Massimo had just studied trigonometry and realised they could calculate the height using their new skills.

In picture 1 they measured the angle to the top of the wall space using a clinometer.  Then Hannah measured the distance from the wall to where she measured the angle (picture 2) and Massimo found out his height (picture 3).  By drawing a diagram (picture 4) and using the wonder of trigonometry they were able to measure the available height.

Trig-tastic!

P7 Maths - Bar Graphs

Primary 7 are at the moment working on bar graphs. We are learning to draw perfect bar graphs, to label them correctly and ultimately, to use software packages on the laptops to draw them. This is good practice for work done further on in the school in a variety of different subjects.

Sorry there is no sound!

First Plants

Our garden area is developing. We now have some early lettuce leaves appearing and have planted strawberries, potatoes, radish, carrots, rhubarb and herbs for the summer.
We planted bulbs in the winter and as you can see Alexander picked our first daffodil which had fallen over - probably when a football landed on it at break time!
We are visiting the garden centre tommorow to select some more plants for the area so watch this spot to see what we choose.

P7/S1 Apple Store Visit

Today P7 and S1 computing went on a trip to Glasgow to visit the Apple Store in Buchanan Street. Apple are very keen to involve schools and colleges in their 'Field Trip' programme which encourages groups to book for tutorial sessions.

AS we have been working with a software package called Keynote we were there to get some expert tips on how to use the features in the new version and show off the presentations that we had made in school. The staff were very impressed with our skills and very happy to demonstrate the exciting new features in Keynote 09.

We are now able to produce presentations and movies with voiceover tracks fo any of the subjects that we do in Cedars School.
Everyone loved the trip and we all received a free Apple t-shirt and certificate of achievement.

Mr J :)
